Wāhine Month - March 2023 UPDATED

To celebrate March Women’s History Month the Matamata-Piako District Libraries are putting the spotlight on New Zealand’s wonderful wāhine.

We will have books celebrating amazing women on display and reading stories about marvellous women and girls during our Toddler Time sessions in each of our libraries.

In Te Aroha Library we will also be featuring panels from the local museum on our suffragists, with a portion of the display generously on loan from Te Aroha Museum.

In Morrinsville the Morrinsville Museum will also have a concurrent display on, on some of the first women settlers to the area.

In Matamata library we are trialling our first women's only Dungeon & Dragon sessions (fully booked).

Nominate a local Wonder Woman

Focussing on Women’s History Month also got the libraries thinking about all the women in our community who won’t make the history books despite all of the incredible things they do. We would like to acknowledge these Wonder Women who give up their time to help make our lives better. Pop into the library, fill in a form and nominate a “Wonder Woman” that you feel deserves recognition or download the form and send it to This email address is being protected from spambots. Nominations are open from 1 March – 31 March.

There is a gift basket in each library up for grabs.

We've been blown away with the fantastic nominations coming in for your Wonder Woman. To acknowledge all these wonderful women, we'd like to invite them (and those who nominated them) along to their local library (Matamata, Morrinsville or Te Aroha) for a special morning tea on Saturday 1 April from 10am.
We'll announce the winner of the gift baskets at each library at the morning tea.
