Rug up and read challenge - Read a book by a Māori author

Tihei mauri ora!

The challenge is to read a book by a Māori author. (This doesn’t have to be in te reo, but ka pai if you choose to do so!)

For adult readers, you’re probably already aware of such luminaries as Alan Duff, Patricia Grace, Keri Hulme, Witi Ihimaera, Paula Morris and Hone Tuwhare – but have you thought about reading poetry by Rowley Habib or Apirana Taylor? Or what about Renee’s fascinating biography, or a novel by Tina Makareti, short stories by Alice Tawhai, or non-fiction by Wira Gardener, Pei Te Hurinui Jones or Sidney Moko Mead? There are plenty of taonga to be found on the library shelves.

For our tamariki, we have picture books galore by such well-known writers for children as Patricia Grace and Gavin Bishop, as well as Ben Brown, Steph Matuku, Mokena Potae Reedy and Stacey Morrison. Teen readers can try stories by Whiti Hereaka and Katerina Mataira – and of course, there’s always the classic Whale Rider by Witi Ihimaera, a timeless tale for any age.

Visit our our Rug up and read challenge page for more information on how to enter or for the full list of all the challenges.
